I am Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Bergen (1988-).
My research interests are primarily religions in Late Antiquity, New Age and theories and methods in the History of Religions, and I have published articles and books in these fields. I am currently working on Asceticism and Sexuality based on the seven texts in Codex II from Nag Hammadi.
As for administrative appointments (selected), I have been Vice Dean (1988) and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Bergen (1989-90), member of the Executive Committee for the University of Bergen (1999-2005), Deputy Chairman of the board of the Norwegian Research Council (2003-2006), Chairman of the board of Chr. Michelsen Institute. Development Studies and Human Rights (2001-2007), member of the board of the Bergen International Festival (1999-2007), member of the scientific board of Religion in the 21Century (Research priority area) (Copenhagen University) (2004-2007), Chairman of the board of the Centre for Medieval Studies (Norwegian Centre of Excellence), University of Bergen (2007-2011) and member of the Executive Committee IAHR (2001-2010). I am also member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters (Trondheim) and member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (Oslo) and have an honorary doctorate at the University of Copenhagen. As of 2010 I am review editor for NUMEN.
