E-mail letter of information: 01.11.05

Dear colleagues, officers of the IAHR affiliates,

June 14th this year, I mailed all of you regarding bids for hosting the IAHR XXth Quinquennial World Congress. At the same time I also took the opportunity to communicate the most relevant news to you.

It is my intention to send you this kind of information from time to time, and in a short while the IAHR website (as one of many results of some changes in organization) will have a page where you can find parts of these newsletters preserved for your information. The minute the revised website is in place, I shall let you know.

As for now, please allow me to forward you the following information relating to the IAHR:

1. Minutes from the International Committee Meeting and the General Assembly in Tokyo this year has been prepared by the out-going General  Secretary, prof. Armin W. Geertz. Please find the two documents attached.(document 1-word archive-) (document 2-word archive-)
A print version of these, together with the IAHR Bulletin, Tokyo Congress Edition, number 38, March 2005, edited by Armin W. Geertz, will be snail-mailed to you before the end of this week.
I want to thank prof. Geertz for the effort he has put into both of these products.

2. A revised brief (policy-)statement on and information about the IAHR has been agreed upon by the Executive Committee. I attach this for your information.(document 3-word archive-)

3. The very same statement will be part, of course, of a revised IAHR pamphlet or brochure which I have produced with the help of our Publications Secretary, Prof. Brian Bocking. It will soon be in print, and I shall send some of these brochures to the general secretaries/secretaries of all the affiliates.

4. As mentioned in June, several of the affiliates which had not paid the annual fee (or several annual fees)  paid up following Tokyo. We are very happy about this. The IAHR cannot function without it. In the not so distant future, the Treasurer will adress the treasurers of the affiliates regarding payment of fees in general, and we strongly suggest that those affiliates who still have not paid their fees (or do not remember whether they have or not), contact the Treasurer, Prof. Gary Lease.

5. The President, Prof. Rosalind Hackett, and the General Secretary, Prof. Tim Jensen, participated in the EASR congress and business meetings in Turku in August, and we want to extend our thanks to the hosts and the EASR. In October, the two of us also participated in a conference in Palma de Mallorca, arranged by the Spanish, Italian, and French Associations, and we extend our thanks to the hosts. Besides the scientific and academic value of participating in conferences on various important themes, participating provides the opportunity to meet with scholars, officers and members of the national associations, and it makes it possible for us to keep in touch with and improve our understanding of the various and different scholarly traditions within the world-wide study of (the history of) religions and the IAHR.

6. As for up-coming IAHR conferences (special or regional) in 2006 and 2007, please consult the IAHR website. As for 2008, the year the International Committee is supposed to meet, we still have not decided upon a venue for the meeting. We shall let you know as soon as we know.

7. If anybody engaged in the 19th Quinquennial World Congress of the IAHR is planning to publish Adjunct Proceedings, they have to make sure to contact the IAHR Executive Committee by way of mailing the Publications Secretary. Prof. Brian Bocking and the General Secretary. Allow me also to remind you that all spin-off volumes must acknowledge that the papers were presented at the IAHR congress, and a minimum of 12 free copies must be made available to the Executive Committee.

Finally, I just want to remind you that the deadline for submission of bids for hosting the XXth World Congress of the IAHR in 2010 is January 31st 2006. You can find the relevant guidelines for running an IAHR World Congress at  http://www.iahr.dk/congress.htm

And, please do not hesitate to mail me whenever you have any questions pertaining to the IAHR.

Sincerely,

Tim Jensen, General Secretary IAHR

XXth IAHR Quinquennial World Congress
